— Project Overview
I spent my summer 2019 as a user experience intern at Schlumberger Limited, a large oilfield services company. For three months, I designed a web application that allows users to have a better experience with the product line where they provide clients with hardware and technologies for oil production process.
— PROBLEM
The current workflow is too complex and long.
With a mass of information with multiple users, tools, and systems, the product line was significantly complicated and results huge communication gaps.
The workflow was very time-consuming and inefficient, so the users needed a way to reduce the repetitiveness of many of their tasks.
— Solution
Present an integrated web application with high visibility and strong communication links.
My task was to improve the current workflow and create an integrated design, providing high visibility data and strong communication links.
Being entirely responsible for the UX design of the web application, I worked to gather feedback every step of the way.
— Process
How do we allow users to work more efficiently?
Three phases:
Performing user interviews to map out and understand the current workflow of the product line as well as their behavior and pain points.
Conducting the UX workshop to capture the key stories and tasks of the users and explore different solutions.
Prototyping solutions by consolidating data points and taking feedback from usability testings every step of the way,
— User Interview
How is the current workflow like?
To understand the current workflow from everyone’s perspective, I Interviewed 20+ people who represent the organizations within the product line.
Looking the product line at a high-level, the process can be illustrated by the image below. Multiple users and tools are involved in the process.
—Research Synthesis
Current Workflow
Throughout a series of user interviews and research, I achieved a solid understanding of the current workflow with a clear view of the problem and user needs. Here is the current workflow of the product line.
Pain Points
Here are some of the main points of concern I found that users faced.
—Strategy
UX Workshop
To fill the gaps in the understanding, my team conducted the UX workshop. My team and the participants discussed about the product line more in detail and explored various ideas surrounding the solutions.
— Define
Design Opportunity
I discovered the key requirements that the participants needed from all the proposed solutions. Here are some of the main focus I defined.

Usability Testing
I did usability testing throughout the clickable high-fidelity prototypes. I received many round of feedbacks on my designs from users, subject matter experts, business stakeholders and other production teams. Along with this feedback, I refined my designs by focusing in on specific user cases, and using mock data to make my designs as realistic as possible.
— OUTCOME
Integrated and real-time web application to improve the complex workflow into simple and seamless experience.
Due to company confidentiality, I am limited in showing the rest of the web application and mockups, as they contain sensitive information and architecture.
